🌙 Sunnah Guide — How to Choose a Muslim Baby Name

The Prophet ﷺ said: "The most beloved of your names to Allah are ﷻ Abdullah and Abdur-Rahman" (Sahih Muslim 2132). He also said: "On the Day of Judgement you will be called by your names and the names of your fathers, so choose good names for yourselves" (Abu Dawud 4948). Here are the four pillars of choosing a Muslim baby name:

1. Beautiful meaning. A name shapes a child's identity — prefer meanings like patience, mercy, gratitude, faith, guidance.
2. Islamic source. Names of prophets, sahaba (Companions), sahabiyat, or the 99 Names of Allah (with the Abd- prefix) are recommended.
3. Avoid names of tyrants. The Prophet ﷺ changed names that carried ugly or oppressive meanings (Aasi → Muti', Harb → Hasan).
4. Time to name. Recommended on the 7th day, alongside the aqiqah (2 sheep for a boy, 1 for a girl). Hair is shaved and its weight in silver given as charity.

📖 Islamic Baby Naming Etiquette (Adab)

• Whisper adhan and iqamah in the baby's right and left ear on the day of birth — this is the reported practice of the Prophet ﷺ with his grandson Hasan (Abu Dawud 5105).
• Perform tahnik — softening a date and gently rubbing it on the baby's palate as a first taste (Sahih al-Bukhari 5470).
• Name the child by the 7th day. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Every child is in pledge for his aqiqah which is slaughtered for him on the 7th day, and he is named on it, and his head is shaved" (An-Nasa'i 4220).
• Aqiqah: two sheep for a boy, one for a girl. Distribute the meat as charity, keep some for family.
• Shave the head and give the equivalent weight in silver as sadaqah.
